Gàidhlig anns a’ Ghleann, Drumnadrochit

Press Release - Gàidhlig anns a’ Ghleann, Drumnadrochit

Parents in the Glen Urquhart area have recently set up a Gaelic development group in the hope of making Gaelic available to children in the Glen Urquhart and Drumnadrochit area.
On Saturday 15th November at Blairbeg Hall in Drumnadrochit from 10.00am - 12.00pm parents will be holding a Gaelic coffee morning to launch a Ceuman Beaga (tiny steps) Gaelic toddlers group.

When asked why the group was set up Clelland McCallum, chair of Gàidhlig anns a’ Ghleann, said “With the resurgence in Gaelic and the new school in Inverness and one proposed for Ft William smaller communities run the risk of being left behind.  So we have decided to push ahead with the help and support of the local Councillors and The Highland Council and establish a group for young children. “

The morning will have games, story telling, puppet show and other activities for children and for adults there will be people on hand to answer any questions they might have about the Ceuman Beaga group or Gaelic in general.

Clelland also mentioned “with the new Ceuman Beaga group not only will our childrens’ early development and language acquisition benefit but there is potential for them to have a well paid career in the future as there is a whole new industry quick growing up around the Gaelic resurgence”.

Anyone interested can get in touch by contacting Clelland on 01456 476258, visit the GaaG web site at www.gaag.org.uk, or just turn up on the day.

Ri Chèile 2008

On 2 October in the Town House, Inverness, a group of Gaelic speaking teenagers will take part in the annual international Public Speaking Forum Cainte, ‘Ri Chèile’ organised by Comunn na Gàidhlig (CnaG) in Scotland and Gael Linn in Ireland.

Pupils from Fort William, Oban, Glasgow, Dingwall, Cumbernauld, Inverness and Stornoway are joined by pupils from different areas of Ireland.  As well as taking part in the forum, the pupils will visit Inverness Museum, take in a walking tour of Inverness and attend a civic reception with hospitality provided by Highland Council.

According to Risteard MacGabhann, Chairperson of Colmcille, “Ri Chèile provides a lively Gaelic-speaking meeting place for young people from Scotland and from Northern and Southern Ireland, to meet and debate in a lively and enjoyable environment. It involves hard work but is also an enjoyable experience for the young people and teaching staff. It is an important project for Colmcille and we are delighted to be associated with it. We congratulate CnaG and Gael Linn and all those involved in its continuing success".

Sheena MacLean of CnaG said “We are delighted to be able to support this event in partnership with Gael Linn. Ri Chèile is important for the linking of the two language communities. It provides an opportunity for young Gaelic speakers to develop their language skills through their preparation for and participation in the debate, which covers a number of topical issues but also gives them an opportunity to mix with teenagers in a similar minority language situation to themselves.”

Topics covered this year will include, “How women have changed the world”, “Gaelic Television programmes – good or bad?”, “Mobile Phones” and “Piping”.

‘Ri Chèile’ was funded by Comunn na Gàidhlig, Gael Linn, and Colm Cille and will run from 1 to 3 October in Inverness.
